12 April 2016, Kuala Lumpur: Lendlease today signed an agreement with Malaysia's Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) to collaborate on a training program for safety supervisors.Called the Safety Supervisor Apprenticeship Program (SSAP), it is the first formal apprenticeship collaboration between the public and private sectors in Malaysia. The program focuses on the safety needs of the construction industry.

The structured program, jointly developed with CIDB, provides industry recognised training (encompassing both theoretical and onsite training components) through an integrated approach by Lendlease and CIDB. Apprentices who successfully complete the SSAP will receive a formal CIDB and Lendlease SSAP qualification. The successful completion also earns the trainee various certifications by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and CIDB Akademi Binaan Malaysia (CIDB ABM). These certifications are required before the apprentices can be appointed as site supervisors on construction projects

The program is aligned to international best practice in construction safety methods for the industry, which Lendlease will contribute through its over 50 years' experience operating around the world.

This training model is similar to apprenticeships offered in the construction industry in Australia and the United Kingdom, where trainees earn an allowance while undergoing a comprehensive training program and on-the-job training. The SSAP training program varies from 12 to 24 months, subject to trainees' experience. The first program is scheduled to run in mid-2016. A total of 150 apprentices will be selected over the five year program period.

Head of Malaysia, Lendlease, Dinesh Nambiar, said, 'Safety is one of our guiding principles and we are committed to Incident and Injury Free workplaces. Through this program, we hope to attract youths to join and stay in the construction industry.'

Mr Nambiar added, 'This collaboration is a reflection of our commitment to safety, enhancing safety training and standards together with CIDB, and raising safety awareness in the industry, which we believe will help to improve safety outcomes in Malaysia.'
