MILPITAS, CA - Augus t 25, 2014 - Linear Technology Corporation introduces the LTC4231, an ultralow quies cent current (IQ) Hot Swap™ controller, enabling s afe board or battery ins ertion and extraction from 2.7V to 36V s ys tem s . The LTC4231 controls an external N-channel MOSFET to gently power up board capacitors , avoiding s parks , connector dam age and s ys tem glitches . Device quies cent current is a m ere 4µA during norm al operation, dropping to 0.3µA in s hutdown m ode. To ens ure low current operation, the undervoltage and overvoltage res is tive dividers
are connected to a s trobed ground, lowering their average current draw by 50x. The LTC4231 provides a com pact and rugged m icropower s olution for hot plugging and battery protection, es pecially in energy cons cious applications utilizing s olar power or energy harves ting.
The LTC4231 s urvives and als o protects downs tream circuitry from revers ed batteries up to -40V by controlling
back-to-back N-channel MOSFETs . Undervoltage protection cuts off low voltage batteries to prevent deep dis charge, while adjus table hys teres is avoids os cillations from battery recovery after load rem oval. Dual level overcurrent protection is provided by a tim ed circuit breaker and fas t current lim it. The 2.7V to 36V operating range accom m odates a wide range of battery chem is tries including lead-acid, Li-Ion and s tacked NiCd.
The LTC4231 is available in two options : the LTC4231-1 rem ains off after an overcurrent fault, whereas the LTC4231-2 autom atically attem pts to turn on after a 500m s cooldown period. Specified over the 0°C to 70°C com m ercial and -40°C to 85°C indus trial tem perature ranges , the LTC4231 is offered in 12-pin MSOP and 3m m x
