LAKE HUGHES, California, Sept. 18, 2014 - On Sept. 13, employees from Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Aerojet Rocketdyne and Northrop Grumman joined forces to support for The Painted Turtle during their annual Aerospace Volunteer Day. Approximately 126 volunteers completed tasks such as yard work, stuffing turtle pillows, cleaning and organizing cabins, and more, all to prepare the camp for its upcoming Fall Family Weekends. The camp is for children who are faced with life-threatening and chronic illnesses. Many of these children would not have the opportunity to have a camping experience due to their illness.
Located in Lake Hughes, The Painted Turtle was unable to hold last year's Aerospace Volunteer Day due to the Powerhouse Wildfire, which swept through the camp site during the summer of 2013. Though all of the camp's major buildings remained intact, every piece of vegetation at the camp and in the surrounding 30,000 acres was destroyed. Because of the extreme smoke damage to the buildings and fire's impact on the terrain, The Painted Turtle was unfortunately forced to cancel all summer and fall sessions for the remainder of the year. After undergoing an extensive process of landscape cleanup, hydro-seeding, cleaning of all buildings and ventilation systems, and an ozone cleaning process of every building, The Painted Turtle re-opened for all sessions in 2014.
About The Painted Turtle:
The Painted Turtle's mission is to provide a year-round, life-changing environment and authentic camp experience for children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses. The Painted Turtle supports children's medical needs, inspires them to reach beyond their illnesses, and provides care, education, and respite for their families. All campers and families attend completely free of charge.
