LPKF Laser & Electronics AG tested the high-tech material titanate - a compound composed of ZrO, TiO, and SnO - with the LPKF ProtoLaser R. The goal was to achieve a higher precision in the HF range, i.e., to ablate 1.78 µm from the surface of the 260-µm-thick compound.
The material test was documented in the publication entitled 'LPKF ProtoLaser R - Application Report. Structuring and Cutting. Titanate.' The ProtoLaser R is the first system with an ultrashort-pulse laser source. Thanks to the picosecond laser, there is no longer any heat input into the material. With its stable parameters in the lower output range (max. 3.7 W), the laser is especially recommended for processing of thin, delicate layers, e.g., in complex thin-film solar cells, or for cutting or ablation of thin materials.

The test delivered remarkable results: the surface after processing with the ultrashort-pulse laser proved to be less 'rough' and the burr formation was minimal. The Au-Ni/Pt metallization could be precisely and rapidly structured with the ProtoLaser R; flexible drilling and cutting without any heat input were also possible due to the picosecond pulse length.

The ProtoLaser R has been attracting great interest on account of the results shown in the report. LPKF presented the test results to Compex Corporation - a US company specialized in the provision of single-layer electronic components for the RF, microwave, telecommunications, fiber optics, defense, and space industries - and was flooded by additional requests for information from the company. The report 'LPKF ProtoLaser R - Application Report. Structuring and Cutting. Titanate' can be found at the LPKF Knowledge Center.
