HBA ERAS Program Distinguished with Healthcare Excellence Award

ERAS Program (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery), an innovating and unique program in Portugal, under development at Hospital Beatriz Ângelo (HBA), since 2016, was distinguished with the first Honourable Mention of the Healthcare Excellence Prize, delivered by the Portuguese Association of Hospital Administration (APAH).

In this fourth edition of Healthcare Excellence Prize, destined to 'distinguish excellence in the administration of health units, acknowledging good practice towards the improvement of service provided to clients, promoting its share and encouraging its consolidation', HBA was only overcome by the Local Health Unit of Matosinhos, distinguished by its Client Portal, an offline platform and mobile app offering more convenience in the access to health services.

ERAS program is destined to patients operated to colon and rectal cancer, and promotes patient optimization, before, during and after surgery, in the purpose of obtaining better treatment results, a faster recovery and lesser internment times.

The hospital approach in the scope of ERAS is always multidisciplinary, every patient being followed-up by a team involving several medical and surgical specialties, nursing, nutrition and rehabilitation, among others.

HBA was the first hospital in Portugal to develop this program, having in the meantime received from ERAS Society qualification as ERAS excellence centre.

HBA ERAS team is already giving training to health professionals from other Portuguese hospitals that intend to start this program, being the only team in the country certified to do it.

APAH also distinguished the Rovisco Pais Medicine and Rehabilitation Centre, in Cantanhede, with an honourable mention for developing 'Via Verde for Stroke Rehabilitation', destined to recover patients and which has enabled to improve the quality of life of stroke survivors.

The three units distinguished - Matosinhos, HBA and Rovisco Pais - were selected among seven final projects, this fourth edition of the initiative having received a total of 19 candidatures.
