Luz Saúde on Top for Specialization

The two major hospital units from Grupo Luz Saúde - Hospital da Luz Lisboa and Hospital Beatriz Ângelo (HBA) - were in highlight, this year, in the choices made by medical graduates for postgraduate specialization. In the 15 medical specialties with vacancies opened by the Ministry of Health all over the country, HBA and Hospital da Luz Lisboa were the first choice for top students - a result that translates, once again, the recognition of the quality education provided in Luz Saúde units and, especially, of the work performed by the professionals involved in this activity.

The choice of the future medical specialists is made based on the grade obtained in the final graduation degree exam - the famous Harrison -, the top ranking ones being the first to choose the hospital unit where they wish to pursue specialization. Therefore, it is worth mentioning that the second best student in this national ranking chose HBA for specialization in Gastroenterology and the fifth best also chose this unit in Loures, run by Luz Saúde, for specialization in Gynaecology-Obstetrics. The eight best student chose Hospital da Luz Lisboa for specialization in Anaesthesiology.

Thus, among the 15 medical and surgical specialties with vacancies opened all over the country, these two units of Luz Saúde were the first choice for five top graduates: besides Gastroenterology, Gynaecology-Obstetrics and Anaesthesiology, Orthopaedics at HBA and Internal Medicine at Hospital da Luz Lisboa were also chosen first by the top graduates at national level. Internal Medicine in Grupo Luz Saúde units deserves in fact special reference: the six top ranking students in the region of Lisboa e Vale do Tejo deciding to follow this specialty, chose vacancies available in Luz Saúde units. Also in Lisbon area, the vacancy in the specialty of Pulmonology at HBA was the first choice, while at national level, General Surgery at the same hospital was chosen by the third best student and Oncology at Hospital da Luz Lisboa was the sixth choice for the best students pursuing this specialty.

These results confirm that the strong investment of Grupo Luz Saúde in pre and postgraduation for medical students is producing the expected outcomes. They also, and above all, acknowledge the extraordinary work developed by Luz Saúde professionals in this educational activity.

Already in 2017, Luz Saúde hospital units were the first choice for top students in several specialties (such as Gastroenterology, Gynaecology-Obstetrics, Paediatrics and Pulmonology). A book published in 2017 revealed that Hospital Beatriz Ângelo was ranked first in a national satisfaction survey promoted by the National Association of Doctors to evaluate internship conditions for young doctors.

The procedure for the filling of vacancies for postgraduate specialization in 2018 started on June 14 and a week later the about 300 vacancies for medical and surgical specialties available in Luz Saúde hospital units were all filled. This year, 2.342 future doctors applied for a total of 1.189 vacancies.
