National Grid is inviting Langley Mill residents and traders to an information event so they can learn more about the final phase of this gas mains replacement work and how it will affect them.

An information bus with full details of the scheme will be at the Car Wash Opposite Wesley Street on Station Road on Monday 17 and Tuesday 18 October from 9.00am to 4.30pm.

National Grid will be replacing almost 350 metres of old metal gas mains with new hard-wearing plastic pipe which is more durable and will last for 80 years if left undisturbed once underground.

Engineers working on behalf of M1 Corridor gas alliance, a partnership between National Grid and AMEC, will begin work week commencing 24 October at the Asda roundabout.

Where possible, the new plastic pipe will be inserted inside the old metal main reducing the need for digging.  However as the main is located underneath the roadway it will be necessary to implement the following traffic management which has been agreed with the local authority.  This is required to ensure the safety of the travelling public and our workforce. 

Phase 1 - commencing 24 October for approx two weeks
Cromford Road will be closed at the junction with A608 and traffic will be diverted via Cromford Road, Upper Dunstead Road, Lower Dunstead Road and Station Road. There will also be three way traffic lights in operation at A608 Station Road/A608 Derby Road/Asda entrance. 

Phase 2 – commencing upon completion of phase 1 for approx two weeks
Traffic lights will be in operation at the junction of Wesley Street and Acorn Shopping Centre.

Phase 3 – commencing upon completion of phase 2 for approx two weeks
Traffic lights will be in operation between the junction of Acorn Shopping Centre and Milnhay Road.

During these works through traffic wishing to avoid the area will be diverted along the A610.

Construction engineer, Richard Cashmore, said: “Please come along and meet us and we will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the work. We wish to assure everyone that we will do our upmost to minimise any disruption associated with this work. 

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused but these are essential replacement works carried out to ensure a continued safe and reliable gas network is delivered to all our customers within the Langley Mill area.”

The project forms part of National Grid’s nationwide mains replacement programme, agreed with the Health and Safety Executive, to replace all metallic gas mains within 30 metres of buildings.
