National Grid : Transformer delivered to help keep the lights on in the North East

▪ Specialist haulage contractors delivered transformer from Tilbury Docks, Essex to Fourstones substation

▪ Delivery vehicle was 21.5 metres long and 5.2 metres high

▪ Project will ensure Northumberland has a safe and reliable source of renewable energy

On Sunday 6th August National Grid successfully delivered a transformer to its Fourstones substation in Northumberland.

The transformer, a large piece of electrical equipment, was delivered by specialist haulage contractors on the Sunday morning. The delivery vehicle and transformer travelled up the A1 from Tilbury Docks, Essex, before joining the B6319 at Haydon Bridge where it completed its journey onto Fourstones substation. Motorists and residents along the route were notified in advance of the delivery and National Grid worked hard to minimise disruption wherever possible.

The delivery was part of National Grid's continuing works to upgrade Fourstones substation and its installation will allow the connection of an onshore wind farm to the National Grid.

As part of National Grid's work to educate and inform residents in the Fourstones area of the impact of the work, students at Shaftoe Trust Primary School in Haydon Bridge were visited by the National Grid who held two 'Science Made Simple' workshops to teach children all about science and engineering. Students also learnt how National Grid's work will connect their community to locally produced renewable energy.
