From 2 January National Grid will finish replacing 3.6km of gas mains around the King Street area of Great Yarmouth. The existing iron mains are being replaced with new long-lasting plastic pipes that will last until the end of the century if left undisturbed in the ground. This work will keep the gas flowing safely and reliably, ensuring homes and businesses are connected to the energy they use.

The public are invited to find out about this £1.5m project by visiting the National Grid information bus outside Burtons on  Market Place NR30 2BA, Great Yarmouth on Wednesday 9 January, between 09:00 and 16:00 hrs, to see the location of works on King Street, Nottingham Way and Regent Boulevard.

National Grid has worked closely with Norfolk County Council to minimise disruption to traffic. The project is expected to last until the end of March 2013.

National Grid project manager Kevin Pettit said: "Our work in King Street is essential to help secure gas supplies for the people of Great Yarmouth. These works will be a short term inconvenience for the long term benefit of the area".

2 - 11 January: There will be a two week closure on King Street and Nottingham Way.  With a diversion to access northern King Street along Dene Side and York Road. A diversion to access southern King Street will go via Dene Side, Alma Road and Friars Lane.

14 January - 14 February:  Regent Boulevard and the top of King Street, where it joins Regent Street, will be closed for two weeks, with access for residents and deliveries only. A diversion will be in place along Alexander Road, Yarmouth Way to Hall Quay and North Quay.

Dene Side will become two-way during this period, providing access to its shops and the Market Place and The Conge will become two way for delivery traffic only.

14 February - 31 March: Work will take place on the junction of King Street and Yarmouth Way with no access to Yarmouth Way:  There will be a diversion via King Street, Nottingham Way and Tollhouse Street for traffic to access Yarmouth Way.  Traffic destined for South Quay will be diverted via Friars Lane.  Access to Howard Street South car park will be maintained at all times, as the diversion will continue along South Quay to Hall Quay then to Hall Plain and Greyfriar's Way.

National Grid

National Grid (LSE: NG; NYSE:NGG) is an electricity and gas company that connects consumers to energy sources through its networks.  The company is at the heart of one of the greatest challenges facing our society - to create new, sustainable energy solutions for the future and developing an energy system that underpins economic prosperity in the 21st century.  National Grid holds a vital position at the centre of the energy system and we 'join everything up'.

In Britain, we run the gas and electricity systems that our society is built on, delivering gas and electricity across the country.  In the North Eastern US, we connect more than seven million gas and electric customers to vital energy sources, essential for our modern lifestyles.

National Grid in the UK:
• We own the high-voltage electricity transmission network in England and Wales, operating it across Great Britain
• We own and operates the high pressure gas transmission system in Britain
• Our gas distribution business delivers gas to 11 million homes and businesses
• We also own a number of related businesses including LNG importation, land remediation and metering
• National Grid manages the National Gas Emergency Service free phone line on behalf of the industry - 0800 111 999 (all calls are recorded and may be monitored).
