Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Metal Corporation

"Tea Room-Spirit of Hospitality Space-" Forum to Be Held
Architect Mr. Kengo Kuma and Sukiya Chief Carpenter Mr. Mikihisa Kinoshita Invited

Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Metal Corporation (NSSMC, Representative Director and President: Kosei Shindo) will hold the "Tea Room-Spirit of Hospitality Space-" Forum for architects and building owners by inviting the architect Mr. Kengo Kuma and Sukiya Chief Carpenter Mr. Mikihisa Kinoshita as guest speakers on April 1, 2015. The event is aimed at promoting the use of NSSMC's titanium products in traditional Japanese tea rooms.

NSSMC's titanium building materials suit the atmosphere of matte roof tiles with a rough and composed surface finish. The properties of titanium, which has excellent lightness and durability, have won acclaim from building owners, and these materials have already been used in many traditional tea rooms created with Japanese architecture, including the Kinkakuji Tea Room (Josokutei) and the Sagawa Art Museum Tea Room (Raku Kichizaemon Kan).

Through this forum, we intend to enable many architects and owners to become aware of the excellent qualities of titanium building materials and to have them consider the use of titanium building materials in tea rooms, shrines or temples, and other building structures. Furthermore, we expect initiatives such as forums to make titanium building materials become more familiar to the general public.

By leveraging the technological capabilities it has accumulated so far, NSSMC has built up a track record of achievements in the use of these materials in more than 600 properties, including Sensoji Temple, the Kyushu National Museum, and the China National Center for the Performing Arts (in Beijing). NSSMC will continue to engage in activities to disseminate titanium building materials and promote the expansion of their application in the roofs and exteriors of various building structures around the world.
