Northern Trust London Employees and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Help Special Educational Needs Children Explore Goals Through Music London, October 27, 2014 -

Volunteers from Northern Trust's (Nasdaq: NTRS) London office, in collaboration with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO), have helped children with special educational needs at Paddock Secondary School explore their ambitions, goals and dreams through music.

The initiative, in collaboration with RPO Resound, the  RPO's community and education programme, also forms part of a celebration of Northern Trust's 125th anniversary which sees each employee worldwide challenged to dedicate an additional 12.5 hours of volunteer service to local communities.

"We launched the Northern Trust: Young Person's Music and Mentoring Programme earlier this year in line with our commitment to building a culture of social awareness and teamwork which engages our employees and enables them to support the communities in which we live and work," said Naomi Venn, head of Corporate Marketing and Communications for Europe, Middle East and Africa at Northern Trust. "We're delighted to see our employees support a diverse range of young people, and give up their time as part of our 125 year anniversary outreach."

Paddock Secondary School is a state school for 72 students ages 11-19 with severe complex learning difficulties and autistic spectrum disorder. Approximately 40 pupils from the school have been working this month with RPO musicians, Northern Trust volunteers and workshop leader Paul Griffiths to devise and present a creative composition exploring the themes of personal identity and aspirations, which culminated in a concert at the school on Friday.

"Friday's concert was the day the children pulled all their mentoring and creative workshops together to showcase the final piece of music they had created with the Orchestra's musicians," said Huw Davies, Development Director, RPO. "Each class wrote songs based on the outcomes of their mentoring sessions and the songs were joined together by music featuring chord sequences spelling out 1-2-5 in honour of Northern Trust's 125th anniversary."

Northern Trust's community partnership programme, Northern Trust Community Partners, offers all permanent employees the opportunity to spend two paid days out of the office each year to support charity and community initiatives. To celebrate Northern Trust's 125th anniversary, employees are dedicating additional hours of volunteer service from the beginning of September to the end of 2014. Northern Trust employees dedicated more than 120,000 volunteer hours in 2013 and hope to significantly exceed that figure through this effort.
