Mobile maternal healthcare app wins "Consumer Service Innovation" and "Best Community Telecom Project" Awards

Yangon, Myanmar

Ooredoo Myanmar has received two international awards for its efforts to offer customers mobile technology services which address real issues facing their communities.

Maternal healthcare app, 'MayMay', was awarded the "Consumer Service Innovation" award at the Global Telecoms Business (GTB) Innovation Awards 2015 and "Best Community Telecom Project" award at the Telecom Asia Awards 2015, held in London and Jakarta, on the 13th and 20th of May respectively.

Both awards recognised MayMay's innovative approach to helping ensure that vital maternal, child health and wellness information is available to women both during and after pregnancy. This is of particular importance in Myanmar given the number of issues around maternal health which exist, including high infant mortality rates and challenging levels of baby malnutrition.

Ross Cormack, CEO, Ooredoo Myanmar, said: "We are delighted to have won these awards and they truly are testament to the team's continued hard-work and dedication. 'MayMay' is a great example of how our team develops innovative, home-grown solutions that speak to real issues affecting people in Myanmar today. As we continue to roll-out our network across the country we are not only bringing new technology to the nation's communities but with apps like MayMay, we are delivering services and tools which use this technology to help people improve their lives."

'maymay' is a maternal healthcare app developed for Myanmar women, with a particular focus on pregnant women. The app bridges the mobile and health sectors to help ensure that a wealth of useful maternal, child health and wellness information is readily available to women across the country both during and after pregnancy.

Powered by Ooredoo, the app was designed by local start-up Koe Koe Tech and developed in conjunction with Population Services International (PSI), a global health organisation that is dedicated to improving the health of people in the developing world. Initial development of the service was made possible via funding granted to Ooredoo from the GSMA Connected Women programme. Today 'maymay' has more than 11,000 users, emphasising the growing demand for the service. It is free and can be accessed on iOS and Android phones.

The Global Telecoms Business (GTB) Innovation Awards 2015 recognized 60 innovative projects in the telecommunications industry worldwide, with awards presented in five categories, including fixed and wireless network infrastructure, wholesale, business, and consumer service innovations. The GTB Innovation Awards dinner was attended by over 300 distinguished industry leaders from the telecoms industry worldwide.

The Telecom Asia Awards 2015 recognized 47 nominated companies across 12 Asia-Pacific markets for consideration in 15 categories. An annual event now in its 18th year, the awards honor that provide the best services in the region, and rewards innovative and outstanding performance by Asian service providers and industry executives.
