Visual bookmarks debut in new Opera browser Opera 25 for Windows and Mac revamps bookmarks

Oslo, Norway - October 15, 2014

New, revamped bookmarks are from today part of the Opera for Windows and Mac web browser. The latest version of Opera allows users to save and sort their favorite pages using perfectly-organized collections of thumbnails.

"Over the past year, we did a great deal of research in order to understand what bookmarking options people are looking for today," says Zhenis Beisekov, Product Manager of Desktop Products at Opera Software. "We realized that many people use bookmarks as a way of tracking their memories, like travel inspiration or a fascinating article. And, since our memories are often visual, we decided to redesign the whole concept of bookmarking."

Traditional bookmarking systems simply note the location of the page. Opera's new visual approach lets users choose a thumbnail for each new bookmark from the webpage itself. This transforms bookmarks into a collection of favorites - websites, products, memories, and more.

How it works

To bookmark a page, Opera for Windows and Mac users can click the heart icon to the right of the address field in the browser. Then, they can assign an image for their bookmark and select a folder to add it to. The bookmarks are stored as thumbnails, which users can rename and rearrange.

More improvements to Opera 25
  • The integrated PDF-viewer enables fast, easy reading of PDFs, directly in the browser.
  • Listening to music and watching video is simplified, now that Opera supports the latest media formats - H.264 and MP3.
  • Web notifications allow developers to send native platform notifications to users, informing them about triggered events, such as the delivery of email.

In other news, Opera 25 for Linux has been upgraded to the beta channel.
