EBACE Convention, GENEVA - Duncan Aviation and Safran Engineering Services have strengthened their existing partnership to create a new STC* (a national aviation authority-approved major modification or repair to an existing type certified aircraft) for FANS-1/A (Future Air Navigation System), an avionics system that provides direct data link communication between the pilot and the Air Traffic Controller. The solution will cover the Bombardier Challenger 601-3A/3R business aircraft. Safran Engineering Services will be in charge of the design and certification while Duncan Aviation will be responsible for the installation of the avionics into the aircraft. Duncan Aviation will be the owner of the Supplemental Type Certificate and is also responsible for the sales and marketing of the solution.

A Future Air Navigation System allows communications that include air traffic control clearances, pilot requests, and position reporting via datalink. It is one of the three components of the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) initiatives that are mandated for the North Atlantic Tracks and Pacific Organized Track System. The Future Air Navigation System developed for the Bombardier Challenger 601-3A/3R will utilize new Honeywell equipment and will fully integrate with the existing Honeywell NZ-2000 Flight Management System.

"The Honeywell NZ-2000 is a well-established, multi-platform system that's a recognized mainstay in the aviation industry. The development of this Supplemental Type Certificate upgrade signifies the committment of Duncan Aviation and Safran Engineering Services to provide a worldwide NextGen platform for the next two decades," says Mark Francetic, Duncan Aviation Regional Avionics Manager.

"This upgrade will complement the existing Safran Engineering Services Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast Supplemental Type Certificate, which enables aircraft to broadcast position to the air traffic control network. We are very pleased to cooperate once again with Duncan Aviation," adds Grégory Mayeur, CEO of Safran Engineering Services.
