No. 73 Chester Square in London's Belgravia, the Grade II listed former home of Baroness Thatcher from 1991 until her passing in 2013, has come to the market through estate agent Savills for £30m on behalf of Leconfield.
Leconfield, a discreet Belgravia development and construction company, purchased the property in 2013. They have spent eighteen months comprehensively refurbishing and restoring the white stucco fronted house, which now boasts a lift, a newly constructed mews house to the rear and a private garage.
Chester Square is one of London's most prestigious and desirable addresses. A serene square in the heart of Belgravia, it has long been a favoured enclave for the most discerning buyers from around the world, as well as boasting distinguished residents past and present.
Several features from Baroness Thatcher's time at the property remain, beginning at its entrance; the inlaid '73' plaque in the doorstep was installed by her in 1991. The front door is steel-lined ensuring it is bombproof, while the original security glass to all windows facing the square has been retained.
Leconfield chose Hopton stone flooring for the entrance hall, the same used in the Houses of Parliament. The layout and design of the formal dining room and interlinking study on the ground floor has been reinstated exactly as Baroness Thatcher had it during her 22 years at the property, providing an impressive link to the property's historical significance.
The entire first floor of the property is dedicated to the drawing room and library, with views of Chester Square and 3.5 metre ceiling heights. It was often said to be Baroness Thatcher's favourite room of the house. The relaxed yet luxurious space now also features a pair of original Louis XVI fireplaces and parquet flooring, selected to match the house's original floor.
The elegant master suite uses the entire floor plate of the second floor, which comprises a large double bedroom, dressing area and master bathroom. There are a further five bedrooms in the property, including the option for staff accommodation.
Providing a contemporary contrast to the Georgian part of the property, the bespoke kitchen is located in the modern mews house. Above the kitchen is a light-filled family room, and positioned on top of the mews house is a roof terrace with a glass skylight that looks back into the family room. Located on the lower ground floor of the mews, a media room and bar area has been created to provide the ultimate entertainment space, as well as a gymnasium. The bar area benefits from a 500 bottle temperature controlled wine cellar.
Richard Gutteridge, Head of Savills Sloane Street office, says 'No 73 is certainly one of the finest houses on the Square, and the quality of renovation is outstanding. The property fully embraces its history and Grade II listed status, whilst the level of craftsmanship has enabled the careful creation of a modern yet traditional home that has cleverly reconfigured the journey through the house. Such an eminent and rare property, in terms of location, renovation and history, no 73 will have a truly widespread appeal to any buyer at this level of the market looking for an exceptional London home. If only the walls could talk, one could almost imagine Ronald Reagan and other heads of state sitting with Baroness Thatcher in her dining room.'
George Brooksbank, Managing Director of Leconfield, says 'It has been a privilege to work on a property with such significant history. We have strived to achieve the perfect balance between traditional and contemporary living by respecting the house's history and restoring many of the original features whilst tastefully incorporating the latest in modern technology. The quality of finish and attention to detail is in a class of its own and I'm proud of what we have achieved.'
