Singapore, February 2, 2018: From under our feet to over our heads - a student research study on converting waste coconut fibres found on coastal grounds into concrete rooftops won top honours today at the year-long 2017 Sembcorp Marine Green Wave Environmental Care Competition.

This outstanding submission was among 307 projects by over 1,000 students at the annual competition, first held 15 years ago in 2003. The projects covered a gamut of environmental conservation subjects, ranging from sustainable waste treatment to developing renewable energy sources and preserving natural resources.

Seventy-five winning teams from primary and secondary schools, institutes of technical education and tertiary institutions received cash prizes of up to $10,000 from Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, at a presentation ceremony in the Marina Mandarin Singapore this morning.

Speaking at the event, Mr Masagos said: 'The impressive level of student participation at the Green Wave competition in the last 15 years shows that our younger generation cares for our environment and is also willing to put their time and efforts into turning their innovative ideas into tangible projects and proofs of concept. I hope that students will commit to do more for climate action such as taking the climate action pledge, and to encourage their peers to do so.'

Since its inception, the Green Wave competition has attracted participation from close to 15,000 students. The competition was extended to the region's tertiary institutions in 2014.

Mr Wong Weng Sun, Sembcorp Marine President and CEO, said: 'The Green Wave competition is part of Sembcorp Marine's long-term commitment to inculcating a sustainability culture among young people. As our future leaders, they play an instrumental role in ensuring that the generations to come can continue to live in a healthy and pleasant environment.

'By providing Green Wave as a platform for students to develop and showcase their creativity and innovation, we look forward to the day when a global sustainability breakthrough can be traced back to one of the entries we have received in this competition.'
