On April 5 2017, SGS held its latest furniture seminar at its laboratory in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

The event gathered together over 50 delegates, representing more than twenty companies, including retailers, manufacturers and importers. Attendees were informed about changes to European Union (EU) standards for outdoor furniture - the EN 581 series.

Focusing on EN 581.1:2017 - General safety requirement for outdoor furniture, the seminar explained the ways in which the updated standard was less stringent with regards to some requirements, for example finger entrapment, while adding additional requirements, for example in relation to glass table-tops. In addition, the presenters also looked at the motivation behind the changes, revealing the need for greater clarity and closer harmony with the realities of the market.

The seminar also examined the recently published changes to EN 581.3:2017 - Mechanical and safety requirements for outdoor tables, which now refers to standard EN 1730:2012 - Test method for tables, and reminded delegates of the changes found in EN 581-2:2015 - Mechanical and safety requirements for seating.

Delegates declared the event a success, with many of them commenting on how helpful the information on the updated versions of EN 581-1-series would be for their businesses in order to develop new designs in accordance with the relevant requirements.
