SGS Societe Generale de Surveillance : EU Announces Amendment of Maximum Residue Levels for Pesticide Residues in Certain Products

In January 2016, the European Union announced four Commission Regulations amending Annexes II, III and V to Directive 2005/396/EC [1] of the European Parliament, and of the Council, with regard to maximum residue levels for pesticides in or on food and feed of plant and animal origin.

Maximum Residue Levels (MRL) for Pesticides in Certain Products

The changes and amendments in the aforementioned Commission Regulations (EU) are related to Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs) for pesticide residues of chlorpyrifos, ametoctradin, chlorothalonil, diphenylamine, flonicamid, fluazinam, fluoxastrobin, halauxifen-methyl, propamocarb, prothioconazole, thiacloprid, trifloxystrobin, 1-methylcyclopropene, flutriafol, indolylacetic acid, indolylbutyric acid, perhoxamid, pirimicarb, prothioconazole, teflubenzuron and fosetyl, in or on, certain products imported into the EU. Details of the changes are shown in Table 1.

Amendments of the Commission Regulations

• The changes to MRLs for chlorpyrifos in mandarins, apples, pears, peaches, table grapes, blackberries, raspberries, currants, gooseberries, kiwi, pineapples, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, aubergines, melons, watermelons, head cabbage, chinese cabbage, globe artichokes, leek and sugar beet, in Commission Regulation (EU) No 2016/60 of January 19, 2016, shall apply from August 10, 2016.

• The changes to MRLs for thiacloprid in Jerusalem artichokes, and the MRL for trifloxystrobin in olive for oil production, in Commission Regulation (EU) No 2016/67 of January 19, 2016 shall apply from February 12, 2016.

• The changes to MRLs for 1-methylcyclopropene, flutriafol, indolylacetic acid, indolylbutyric acid, perhoxamid, pirimicarb, prothioconazole and teflubenzuron, as well as the MRL for trifloxystrobin in olive for oil production, in Commission Regulation (EU) No 2016/71 of January 19, 2016 shall apply from August 16, 2016.

• The changes to MRLs for fosetyl, in and on all products, in Commission Regulation (EU) No 2016/75 of January 19, 2016 shall apply from January 1 2016.

Table 1

These Regulations shall enter into force 20 days after their publication. Consignments of food and feed that left their country of origin prior to these Regulations coming into force, may still be imported without being accompanied by a health certificate or the results of sampling and analysis.

What do the changes mean?

Member States shall take and analyze samples for the pesticide/product combinations and the number of samples of each product, including foods for infants and small children and products originating from organic farming.
