May 10, 2016

Following amendments by EU Directive 2015/863, SGS has published RoHS II: Meet The Compliance Challenge, a white paper exploring the changes it introduces to EU's Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive 2011/65/EU (RoHS II).

Directive 2015/863 has added four new restricted substances to the RoHS II - Restricted Substances and Allowable Levels List. These are:

  • Bis (2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP)
  • Butly benzyl phthalate (BBP)
  • Dibutyl phthalate (DBP)
  • Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP)

These substances are added to a list that includes: Lead (Pb), Mercury (Hg), Cadmium (Cd), Hexavalent Chromium (Cr VI), Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE), and Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB).

Under RoHS II, all these substances must have a maximum concentration limit of 0.1% w/w of the homogeneous material they are contained in. These restrictions came into effect on July 22, 2014 for products in Categories 1-7, 10 and 11, and will come into effect on July 22, 2021 for products in Categories 8 and 9.

Complying with RoHS II and Directive 2015/863 is a difficult task for many companies. It requires compliance with a number of new pieces of legislation. SGS's white paper can help organizations to better understand the contents and potential implications of the changes to RoHS II.
