SGS has launched a new laboratory at the KLASCO terminal, in Klaipeda, Lithuania, offering 24/7 grain sampling and testing on incoming grain trucks.

SGS has been controlling grain handling at the KLASCO terminal for more than 10 years. Working with KLASCO (SC Klaipeda Stevedoring Company), SGS's laboratory is the first testing facility at Lithuania's biggest grain terminal. The company has invested in new facilities for the sampling of wheat, barley and rapeseed. Equipped with Infraneo, nilema litre, FN apparatus, physical grains control and a truck vacuum sampler, the lab employs 20 samplers, inspectors and analysts to provide sampling and testing services 24 hours day seven days a week.

"SGS' investment in Port Klaipeda reflects changes in the grains supply chain," said Nikolay Balykov, SGS Klaipeda. "Grains, traditionally transported as rail cargo, are increasingly being moved by road, this new facility places sampling and testing facilities where our clients need them."

On-site testing services can be conducted rapidly, within an hour, including:

  • Express testing
  • Admixtures
  • Test Weight (TW)
  • Falling Number (FN)

KLASCO receives some 100-180 delivery trucks daily, some 600 000 MT per season. In addition to sampling, SGS offers:

  • First stage grading
  • Loading supervision
  • Stock monitoring
  • Fumigation
  • Customs clearance

Traders operating into KLASCO can now arrange grain deliveries direct from farms to the grain terminal. This reduces the associated transport, storage and handling costs. All they need to do is request sampling and testing prior to unloading.

From in-field sampling to laboratory samples, analysis helps traders to:

  • Get the data required for informed decision-making
  • Identify and rectify issues quickly and efficiently
  • Verify quality and take action as required

SGS uses only accredited sampling methodologies delivering accurate and reliable results.

SGS Lithuania is a superintendent and analyst member of Gafta (Grain and Feed Trade Association) and a FOSFA (Federation of Oils, Seeds and Fat Associations) analyst.
