Singapore, 13 January 2017-More than 20 staff from Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) distributed festive bags (福袋)to 120 seniors from the AWWA Senior Community Home at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6, as part of the company's annual 'SPH Cares with Bags of Love' event.

The festive bags, worth more than $50 each, included basic necessities like bread, rice, cereals and canned food, as well as festive items like Mandarin oranges. These items were donated by sponsors, SPH divisions and staff.

The senior residents were treated to lo-hei and a special CNY lunch. Sky Fah Soon Guan, Senior Mailroom Technician of SPH's Production Division, also dressed up as God of Fortune (财神爷) to spread some festive cheer.

Established in 1976, AWWA Senior Community Home started as a sheltered home with 20 residents and is the first community home to be housed within a HDB rental block. Today, it is 'home away from home' to 140 seniors aged 60 and above, without family support or next-of-kin and are on public assistance

Mr Keith Lee, Director of AWWA Health and Senior Care, said, 'Chinese Lunar New Year is one of the festive holidays where our seniors look forward to celebrating and having a hearty meal with one another like family as many of the seniors have come to care for one another and built camaraderie and lasting friendships over the years. We appreciate SPH staff bringing much cheer and joy to our seniors with this delectable lunch and dressing up as 'God of Fortune' which is much enjoyed by the seniors'.

Ms Chin Soo Fang, Head of SPH's Corporate Communications & CSR Division, said: 'Giving back to the community is a major part of our corporate DNA. This event brought staff together for a good cause, whether by sponsoring items or sharing the festive spirit with the seniors. It also marks the first of our many corporate social responsibility programmes every year to serve and help the community.'

Managed by the Corporate Communications & CSR Division with the support of the Human Resources Division, the SPH Staff Volunteers Club was launched in 2010 to encourage active volunteerism among staff. Besides a busy calendar of charitable activities, there are 20 business units in SPH which have adopted various charities under the Club's Adopt-A-Charity scheme.
