ORTHOPHOS: With a functional design for better perspective

They are among the most successful dental units of all - the digital x-ray units of the ORTHOPHOS family. Sirona has now sold more than 100,000 of them. No wonder: The systems are impressive with their functionality and quality and are real eye-catchers for the practice. Yesterday, the latest generation, the ORTHOPHOS SL, received the prestigious Red Dot Award for the best product design in 2015.

Bensheim/Salzburg. Hybrid devices for 2D and 3D x-rays are the modern answer to the demands of the private dental practice. This is the case with the function and design of the ORTHOPHOS family. This is shown not only by the high sales figures of digital x-ray units from Sirona, but also by the awarding of the Red Dot Design Award for the ORTHOPHOS SL, which took place on Monday evening at a glamorous gala and in the presence of the international design scene in the Aalto Theatre in Essen, Germany.

Once again, a Sirona product was able to prevail in the face of competition. In the 60th year of its existence, 1,994 companies from 56 countries had submitted a total of 4,928 innovations to the Red Dot Design Award. The jury, consisting of renowned designers, prestigious design professors and trade journalists from 25 countries, evaluated each product for (among other things) functionality, degree of innovation, formal quality and ecological compatibility.

New standards in technology and design

The ORTHOPHOS SL is the result of a long success story: With the ORTHOPHOSPlus DS, the world's first digital panoramic x-ray unit was presented in 1995. Sirona, already then a pioneer of digital technology in the dental industry, continued to set new standards in diagnosis and treatment planning in the following decades through several device generations. In 2010, for example, the breakthrough for 3D x-ray in private practice was made with the ORTHOPHOS XG 3D: as a hybrid device, the system facilitated the entry into DVT technology. Its brother, the ORTHOPHOS SL, which was presented at the IDS 2015, is linked to it and sets new standards in many respects - including in design. For this, it has now received the prestigious Red Dot Design Award.

The ORTHOPHOS concept has arrived. "Innovative technology in an easy-to-use device that will grab the attention in your dental practice - with our digital ORTHOPHOS x-ray devices, we provide solutions for any dental practice. We have now been able to sell more than 100,000 ORTHOPHOS devices worldwide," says Jörg Haist, Head of Product Management Imaging Systems at Sirona.

Excellent integration capability

The special design of the ORTHOPHOS SL, with which both 2D and 3D x-ray images with outstanding image quality can be created, recently impressed the jury of the iF product design awards. The overall evaluation also included the system integration capability of the product. The x-ray units of the ORTHOPHOS family score points with harmonized solutions, such as the intuitive x-ray software SIDEXIS 4. It provides efficient workflows for simultaneous surgical and prosthetic implant planning or for the analysis of the airways in the case of obstructive sleep apnea.
