(COLUMBIA, SC- May 23, 2016) South State Bank announced that Tripp Whitener has joined the company as a senior commercial lender.

A native of Columbia, Whitener will be responsible for growing the bank's commercial and industrial portfolio primarily in the central part of the state with a focus on Columbia and Lexington. During his career, he has worked in Greenville, Charlotte and Columbia.

'I am confident that Tripp's experience and knowledge of the market will be an excellent match for this position and a strong asset to the team,' said Jack Goettee, southern banking group president, South State Bank.

With over 20 years in the banking industry, Whitener has worked in various positions with both regional community banks and large banks. During his career, he has worked on the treasury services platform and has served as a commercial area executive. Most recently, Whitener worked as a commercial and industrial middle market banker with a regional community bank.

Whitener is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Wofford College where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in political economy and philosophy. He is also a graduate of Leadership Columbia and The Riley Institute Diversity Leaders Initiative of Furman.

An active member of the community, Whitener has served in leadership positions on the board of Town Theater, the Cultural Council of Richland and Lexington Counties, The Indian Waters Council of the Boy Scouts of America, and Brennen Elementary School PTO. He currently serves as chairman of the City Center Partnership.
