Construction has started on a new 90,000 sq ft industrial estate in the heart of Letchworth's business district, to provide much-needed modern commercial space in the town.

The UK's leading regeneration specialist St. Modwen is confident of high demand for the units which they are building speculatively, and already has a unit of 15,000 sq ft under offer to a local business.

The regeneration of the former power station on Works Road, which has been vacant since 2006, will see the first new industrial scheme delivered in the town for many years.

Gary Morris, Senior Development Manager at St. Modwen said that the new units were needed to accommodate expansion plans of Hertfordshire-based businesses:

"As the regional economy returns to growth, companies are looking for new, modern industrial units from which to build their businesses. We are delighted to finally be able to bring this development forward and provide the new units that the local businesses require.

"We have already had a lot of interest from companies looking to relocate and as construction progresses, we are confident that more of the remaining units will be let ahead of the scheduled completion date of June 2015."

John Lewis, Chief Executive of Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation added:

"This represents a significant investment in the town and it's encouraging to see a national developer showing such confidence in investing in the local economy."

Letting agents for the scheme are Brown & Lee and Collliers.
