Sydney Airport CEO Geoff Culbert said, "2017 was another record year for Sydney Airport facilitating 43.3 million passengers though our three terminals, an increase of 3.6% compared to 2016.

International passenger numbers were outstanding growing by more than one million, or 7.2% on 2016.

Our strong growth has been underpinned by capacity development predominantly on the Middle Eastern, Asian and US routes. The capacity additions have totalled well over one million new international seats for the second consecutive year and the pipeline of capacity announcements continues to be strong for the coming season.

"International passenger traffic in December increased 5.6% compared to the prior corresponding period (pcp). Domestic passenger traffic also performed well growing 2.1%, resulting in 3.5% growth in total passenger traffic. This strong December result was driven by both seat capacity growth and stable load factors.

"Sydney's fastest growing foreign nationalities again included Chinese, Indian, South Korean and American visitors. Australian outbound international passenger growth also performed well increasing 5.3% for the month, with many Australians choosing to travel overseas during the Christmas holiday period.

"Pleasingly, Malaysian Airlines, Tianjin Airlines and Hainan Airlines all announced capacity additions this month. Malaysian Airlines becomes the ninth carrier choosing to use the A380 to serve Sydney Airport, capping off a stellar year during which we were the world's fastest growing A380 port3. Tianjin

Airlines and Hainan Airlines both announced their services would commence year-round. Sydney Airport now serves 17 mainland Chinese cities which represent almost 90% of all travel on the China-Sydney route. We see the next wave of Chinese growth underpinned by increasing competition, frequency and upgauges."

  • • Tianjin Airlines announced Tianjin-Zhengzhou-Sydney will now operate year-round, commencing 30 January 2018. The service will operate on an A330-200 aircraft with 260 seats.

  • • Hainan Airlines announced Haikou-Sydney will now operate twice weekly year-round, commencing 31 January 2018. The service will operate on an A330-300 with 292 seats. The annual seat addition is 39,416 above the previously announced service

  • • Malaysian Airlines has confirmed they will upgauge their A330-200 aircraft on the Kuala Lumpur-Sydney route to an A380 between March and July. This A380 aircraft is configured with 494 seats and represents an additional 8,320 seats annually
