Norton Earns AV-TEST Innovation Award For Protecting Consumers From Risky Android Apps

App Advisor for Google Play feature, powered by Norton Mobile Insight, recognized for proactive threat protection, app intelligence

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - March 2, 2015 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) announced today it received the AV-TEST Innovation Award 2015 in Mobile Security for App Advisor for Google Play, a feature found in both Norton's consumer and Symantec's enterprise mobile solutions. The award presentation will take place at the Symantec booth at Mobile World Congress located in Hall 5, exhibit number 5D31, at 5:30 p.m. (GMT+1) on Tuesday, March 3.

App Advisor for Google Play, powered by Norton Mobile Insight, received the AV-TEST Innovation Award, established in 2013, because AV-TEST was impressed by the intelligence provided to users through the unique App Advisor for Google Play feature. This feature provides proactive and relevant information to mobile users on the security, privacy and annoying/intrusive behaviors of potentially risky apps before downloading while browsing Google Play. In addition, App Advisor lets mobile users know if an app requires high battery or data plan usage, making it easy for mobile users to make an informed choice about what they are willing to trade for using a particular app.

"We chose the App Advisor technology, powered by Norton Mobile Insight, because we wanted to reward innovation instead of run-of-the-mill technology and features," said Andreas Marx, CEO, AV-TEST. "There are a large number of manufacturers of security solutions, but when we see one that has gone beyond the basics of product development to introduce innovations to the market that solve for global challenges, we are compelled to reward and recognize the tremendous work."

As people are using mobile apps for making mobile payments, controlling Internet of Things (IOT) devices and storing personal information, mobile phones are increasingly becoming the targets of mobile theft and cybercrime.

Symantec's technology monitors for bad app behaviors and helps keep mobile users informed and their information protected. Norton Mobile Insight is a dynamic technology that continually downloads and analyzes new and updated Android apps by crawling more than 200 app stores. More than 50,000 apps or app updates are analyzed every day for a total of more than 16 million apps analyzed to date. The technology has uncovered 10 million apps with potential privacy leaks or intrusive behaviors, 4 million malicious apps and 900,000 apps with medium or high battery or data usage.

"The App Advisor for Google Play feature breaks new ground in mobile technology by providing an unprecedented view of the safety and potential risks of an app while the user is browsing on the Google Play app store," said Amit Mital, executive vice president, chief technology officer, Symantec. "We are thrilled to be honored by such a reputable security organization as AV-TEST for the hard work and innovation this technology encompasses. The App Advisor for Google Play feature provides our enterprise and consumer mobile device customers the ability to easily make informed choices before downloading apps and potentially exposing corporate networks, mobile users' devices and personal information to malicious code, potential privacy risks and intrusive behavior."
