R&D Magazine names Preferred RCS™ Resin Coated Sand with Dow TERAFORCE™ Technology one of the 100 most influential innovations in 2013

An innovative new product resulting from a collaborative effort between Preferred Sands, LLC ("Preferred Sands") and The Dow Chemical Company ("Dow") (NYSE: DOW) has been named by R&D Magazine as one of the 100 most influential innovations in 2013. Preferred RCS™ Resin Coated Sand with Dow TERAFORCE™ Technology  ("product") was honored with an R&D 100 Award for its role in helping improve oil productivity and the environmental profile of the hydraulic fracturing process, which is at the heart of the U.S. energy boom, manufacturing renaissance and job creation.

The product's unique polyurethanes coating properties deliver many benefits during the oil and gas recovery process, including:

  • Saving energy by requiring shorter production cycles and low temperatures so that large volumes can be produced at a single production site.
  • Eliminating the need for an external activator (additional chemicals) that competing technologies require to be injected into the oil well.

"We are delighted to be honored with Preferred Sands for this industry-changing technology," Chris Chrisafides, Commercial Director for Dow Polyurethanes in North America. "This technology demonstrates how a unique and close collaboration with our customer results in innovation that capitalizes on a growth market while addressing the short and long-term needs of society."

Preferred Sands founder and CEO, Michael O'Neill, highlighted the strategic collaboration with Dow for achieving this success. "The high values of safety and community responsibility we share with Dow position our strategic collaboration for ongoing success," said O'Neill. "The technology delivers a high performing alternative for the oil and gas industry and we're thrilled to be working with a company that is committed to creating solutions that address industry challenges with sustainability always top of mind."

The R&D 100 Awards identify and celebrate the top technology products of the year. Past winners have included sophisticated testing equipment, innovative new materials, chemistry breakthroughs, biomedical products, consumer items, and high-energy physics.

The Dow TERAFORCE resin enables the new Preferred RCS product line to meet key needs of the oil and gas industry.  Not only does it perform well under a range of conditions and depths, but it is also cost-effective and improves the sustainability of the drilling process. As part of its expanded portfolio, RCS GarnetTM was designed specifically for flowback control in low temperatures with a built-in activator that does not require an additional chemical treatment, and it produces measurably better bond strength while still delivering better conductivity.

This innovative coating process allows for coated sand to be produced using less energy while minimizing environmental impact compared to phenolic resins.  It also provides the industry with an outstanding performance-to-cost value, enabling users to substantially improve operations while still curtailing expenses.

Dow Polyurethanes joins four other Dow businesses - Dow Water & Process Solutions, Dow Oil, Gas & Mining, Dow Automotive Systems, and Dow AgroSciences - being honored with R&D 100 Awards for innovative technologies. The awards will be presented at the 52nd annual R&D 100 Awards banquet on November 7, 2014 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
