Frontier Silicon solutions first to support new Euro-ready Digital Tick

London, 3 August 2016

Frontier Silicon's Venus Colour reference platform has become the first DAB digital radio to receive Digital Radio UK's new European-ready Digital Tick.

In July, Digital Radio UK introduced an updated version of its Digital Tick specification. The new specification aims to ensure that devices awarded the Digital Tick in the UK will be fit for purpose in markets across Europe.

The new European specification requires receivers to display a full range of Latin-based scripts and receive signals across 38 Band III channels (previously performance was only tested against the 12 channels used in the UK).

Currently, national DAB / DAB+ services are available in seven European countries: Denmark, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland and the UK; regular services are also on air in Belgium, France and Poland; and trials are on air (or are planned) in Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Slovenia. With the European-ready Digital Tick, manufacturers can be confident that their devices will work effectively in any of these markets.

Sam Bonham, Head of Technology Development & the Digital Radio Tick Mark, Digital Radio UK,, said:

'We introduced the European-ready minimum specification to provide manufacturers with the reassurance that their receivers will work across multiple markets as digital radio becomes more widely available. We are delighted to see the launch of Frontier Silicon's European-ready Venus Colour.'

The Venus Colour platform was awarded the new European-ready Digital Tick last month.

Based on Frontier's best-selling Verona 2 module, the Venus Colour platform is a reference design which enables OEMs to accelerate the development of DAB / DAB+ / FM radios with colour screens.

The Venus Colour platform is based on a flexible architecture which allows the inclusion of additional features, such as Bluetooth® streaming. The colour screen, which is a core part of the radio, can be used to display programme-relevant text and full-colour images.

Prem Rajalingham, Vice-President, Sales and Marketing, Frontier Silicon, said:

'As the international adoption of DAB digital radio grows, it is essential that manufacturers have confidence that their products will meet consumer expectations in markets not only in the UK, but across all of Europe. I am delighted that Frontier is the first company to have a product awarded the new European-ready Digital Tick. This reinforces our commitment to offering our customers best-in-class technology solutions.'

Frontier Silicon will demonstrate the Venus Colour platform and its full range of DAB solutions at IFA 2016 in September.
