Low, relatively stable natural gas prices helped keep gas as most affordable heating source

Dayton, Ohio - West central Ohio customers of Vectren Energy Delivery of Ohio (Vectren) who heated their homes with natural gas this past winter paid significantly less than those who used propane or electricity to heat their homes over the winter heating season of November through March. Thanks to the continued favorable long- term pricing for natural gas, it remained the most cost-effective energy source for home heating this past winter.
Had winter weather been normal, the average Vectren customer would have paid $70 to $80 per month in home heating costs during the 2013-2014 heating season for a five-month total of $350 to $400 depending upon the efficiency of the furnace and size of the home.

"Even though all energy bills, regardless of fuel source, were much higher than expected this past winter due to extreme cold temperatures, those who used natural gas paid less than those who heat with alternative sources," said Colleen Ryan, president of Vectren Energy Delivery of Ohio. "Although we saw some price market volatility with short-term gas prices this winter due to the bitter cold weather, forecasts show the long-term natural gas market remaining relatively stable for years to come, which will continue to benefit those who utilize this abundant, domestic fuel."
