Vectren resurrects appliance recycling program; Has saved enough energy to power 385 homes for one year

Evansville, Ind. - After a few months off to switch vendors, Vectren Energy Delivery (Vectren) has re-launched its appliance recycling program for its electric customers in southwestern Indiana. Launched in the spring of 2010, the appliance recycling program offers residential customers a $50 rebate and free pickup for recycling an outdated, inefficient refrigerator or freezer that is in working condition.

To schedule an appliance pick-up, call 1-888-277-0526.

"We are excited to once again offer this program to customers who want to take an active role in using energy wisely," said Brad Ellsworth, Vectren's president of Vectren South. "Most people realize their old appliances are inefficient and consume a great deal of electricity, but don't have the means to discard them. By offering a $50 rebate and a free pickup, it makes the recycling effort easy and convenient. "

Vectren estimates the energy savings from the 7,150 units collected thus far to be nearly 4.5 million kilowatt hours (kWh), which translates to enough energy to power about 385 homes for one year. The utility hopes to add an additional 950 units by year end to its recycled number after transitioning to a new program vendor.

"U.S. Department of Energy research indicates more than 25 percent of homeowners have more than one refrigerator and/or freezer, and that number is growing at a rate of 1 percent each year," added Ellsworth. "Often these secondary units, which wind up in the garage or basement, are very inefficient and minimally used, and customers don't realize they could trim up to $200 a year from their electric bills by permanently retiring the older appliances."

To qualify for the appliance recycling program, the customer must have Vectren residential electric service. Vectren offers additional energy efficiency programs for residential and business customers. Learn more about Vectren's programs at www.vectren.com/saveenergy or call 1-866-240-8476.

Vectren provides electric service to 143,000 customers in southwestern Indiana, including Dubois, Gibson, Pike, Posey, Spencer, Vanderburgh and Warrick counties.
