Lawmakers Resolve Dispute Over Border Funds as Partial Shutdown Looms
WASHINGTON-Lawmakers who are finishing writing six annual spending bills have resolved a last-minute roadblock over border funding, setting the stage for Congress to review and approve the legislation on a tight timeline that could take them to the brink of a partial government shutdown this weekend.
Congressional negotiators from both parties late Monday reached a deal on the provisions within the Department of Homeland Security's funding bill, according to a person familiar with the agreement. That bill got caught in an 11th-hour tangle with the White House over border spending, which has become a top issue in many swing states during the 2024 presidential-election year.
