WASHINGTON, April 23 (Reuters) - The head of the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday defended legislation that would give TikTok's Chinese owner ByteDance about nine months to divest its U.S. operations or face a ban.

Senate Intelligence Committee Chair Mark Warner said lawmakers hope TikTok, the short video app which is used by 170 million Americans, will remain in business in the United States. "To those young Americans, I want to say, We hear your concern and we hope that TikTok will continue under new ownership -- American or otherwise...from Britain, Canada, Brazil France. It just needs to be no longer controlled by an adversary."
