Sterling May Have Limited Scope to Rise on BOE Rate Expectations

1027 GMT - Sterling is unlikely to materially benefit from expectations the Bank of England will keep interest rates higher for longer to contain inflation, Rabobank says. "Although higher for longer is a theme for the BOE interest rate outlook, the market is also assessing this outcome for Federal Reserve rates and for other central banks including the European Central Bank, Riksbank, Reserve Bank of Australia and Bank of Canada," Rabobank forex strategist Jane Foley says in a note. That suggests limited room for sustainable sterling gains, she says. With further bouts of dollar strength likely this year, GBP/USD could see dips to 1.20 from 1.2431 currently while EUR/GBP may rise to EUR/GBP 0.90 in nine months from 0.8822 currently, she says. Market Talk:

Haleon Demand Proves Resilient Despite Price Hikes

1007 GMT - Haleon's trading update shows that price hikes across the business didn't have a negative impact on demand, with volumes increasing during the period, AJ Bell investment director Russ Mould says in a note. "Companies like Haleon have faced a customer loyalty test over the past year as the cost-of-living crisis has forced many people to reconsider their spending habits, often trading down from well-known brands to cheaper alternatives offered by supermarkets," he says. However, consumers seeking pain relief seemed to prefer brands they trust, believing they offer a superior product, Mould adds. Shares rise 2.4%. (michael.susin@wsj.com)

PensionBee's 1Q Confirms Pivot to Profitability Is on Track

1000 GMT - PensionBee's first-quarter figures highlight a good start of the year helped by kinder markets, Liberum says in a note after the online pension company posted a rise in revenue and assets under administration in the first three months of 2023. A 28% revenue boost shows that marketing spend is being deployed more effectively and productivity continues to improve without impacting best-in-class service levels, say analysts James Allen and Nick Anderson. "The business is highly scalable, with sticky revenues, but the market clearly underestimates the long-term margins that this company can generate," they add, noting that its pivot to profitability looks on track. Liberum has a buy rating on the stock. Shares slip 0.9% at 90.2 pence. (elena.vardon@wsj.com)
