The FTSE 100 added 0.6%. Other stocks in Europe were down as France's CAC 40 declined 0.2% and Germany's DAX dropped 0.4%.

In commodities, Brent crude rose 0.2% to $87.19 a barrel, and WTI crude gained 0.2% to $82.95 a barrel. The European benchmark price for natural gas, the Dutch futures contract TTF, was up 2.2% to EUR29.65 a megawatt hour.

The German 10-year Bund yield declined by 1 basis point to 2.583% from 2.593%, and the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury was flat at 4.649%. Bond prices and yields move in opposite directions.

Stocks in Asia were mixed as Japan's Nikkei 225 index declined 2.2%, whereas Hong Kong's Hang Seng climbed 0.6%. China's benchmark Shanghai Composite climbed 0.3%.
