Tanzania's gold export value fell by 2.5% in July on month, the country's central bank said Friday.

Gold sold fell to $243.6 million in July from $249.8 million in June, the bank said in its July export of goods and services report. The data didn't indicate the amount sold.

In July, the average price of the precious metal on the global market fell by 5.7% to $1,732.74 a troy ounce compared with $1,836.57 the previous month, it said.

Gold is Tanzania's main foreign-exchange earner after overtaking tourism in 2020 due to Covid-19 pandemic restrictions, according to the bank.

Tanzania gold export earnings were $2.71 billion in the year ended July, accounting for 38% of the country's total goods and services exports, the bank said.
