The container vessel that collided with a major bridge in Baltimore was at the time chartered by shipping company Maersk and carrying its customers' cargo, the Danish group said in a statement.

The Singapore-flagged vessel, known as "Dali" and operated by charter company Synergy Group, was set to depart the U.S. port city to head to Colombo, Sri Lanka. At the time of the incident, no Maersk crew marylandand personnel were onboard.

"We are closely following the investigations conducted by authorities and Synergy, and we will do our utmost to keep our customers informed," Maersk said on Tuesday.

At 1057 GMT, Maersk shares traded 2.2% lower at DKK8,908.

Earlier on Tuesday, the vessel crashed into one of the support pillars of the Francis Scott Key bridge, causing it to collapse into the Patapsco River and sending several vehicles into the water below.
