BT today announced the launch of its new multi-million euro NB-IoT network, which is set to pave the way for more smart cities and industries in the UK, with the network covering 97% of the UK population. It is based on the award-winning EE mobile network.

BT says the NB-IoT network is low-power, allowing devices to be connected securely and reliably to automate many processes that currently require manual monitoring or direct involvement.

'BT's new NB-IoT network will enable low-data-demand assets, such as street lighting or groundwater sensors, to be connected on a smart grid. This will not only ensure long battery life, but can also improve efficiency and reduce costs (by automatically detecting leaks in water infrastructure, for example)', concludes the British firm.
