Preparation pays off in lower energy bills

PINEVILLE, La., Oct. 26, 2015 - Fall is the time to prepare for the damp, cold days of winter and the impact they can have on energy bills. To avoid surprises on winter electric bills, now is the time to begin preparing for the cold weather. Cleco offers customers ways to stay warm and conserve energy this season.

'Maintaining heating and cooling units is the first step to lower bills,' said Shirley Turner, general manager of customer experience. 'Heating and cooling systems account for about half of a home's energy use so a well-kept unit and a thermostat setting of 68 degrees when cooler weather begins offer the potential for lower energy use and lower bills.'

Window air conditioning units that stay in place during the winter should be sealed between the unit and the window with caulking or tape and cover the outside with an airtight, insulated jacket that is sealed against the window frame. In addition, check for holes or cracks that let in the cold air, and add caulk and weather stripping to seal air leaks.

The second largest energy consumer in a home is a water heater, which can account for 10-to-20 percent of an electric bill. Experts recommend a setting of 120 degrees and wrapping the electric water heater in an insulating blanket to help keep the water warm in the tank.

Cleco also offers energy efficiency programs that give customers cash incentives to voluntarily make energy upgrades to their homes. Energy upgrades often result in reduced energy bills.
