Montgomery County Pennsylvania Expects to Save $4.2 Million Through Energy Performance Contract With Constellation

Energy and water conservation measures at Montgomery Courthouse support County's Climate Change Action Plan

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (June 19, 2014) - Montgomery County, Pa., and Constellation today announced construction for $2.4 million in water and energy conservation measures at the Montgomery County Courthouse. The conservation measures are guaranteed to provide approximately $4.2 million in cost savings through the county's 20-year energy performance contract with Constellation. Montgomery County is expected to see a complete return on its investment in less than 12 years.

"This Administration is fulfilling its promise to invest capital dollars in county-owned assets, and to provide the most efficient government possible to its constituents," said Josh Shapiro, chair of the board of county commissioners. "This project represents our commitment to provide a healthy and comfortable work environment for our employees and those visiting the courthouse, while also ensuring that we are environmentally responsible. Additionally, this investment will produce a relatively quick monetary return to the county."

By implementing water and energy conservation measures, Montgomery County expects to conserve an estimated 3 million gallons of water and avoid the creation of 2 million metric tons of carbon dioxide annually over the 20-year contract term.

"Energy performance contracting is a valuable resource for customers, like Montgomery County, to leverage their existing operational budgets for needed capital improvements," said Larry Godleski, director, regional energy efficiency, Constellation. "We look forward to working with Montgomery County to meet its environmental goals and reduce energy costs though more efficient systems."

The conservation measures installed by Constellation include: building automation controls upgrades; low-flow toilets and faucets; duct sealing and cleaning; chilled water system optimization; building envelopment improvements such as caulking and weather stripping; and energy-efficient exterior lighting.

Work is scheduled for completion by the end of 2014.
