The first of the highly anticipated new banknotes, the 10 and 20 Macao Patacas were unveiled in late October. These remarkable new notes issued by the BNU, one of the two National Issuing Banks in Macao, have been meticulously designed by De La Rue.
On the front of each note, an updated intaglio vignette of the iconic Banco Nacional Ultramarino building takes centre stage. Meanwhile, on the reverse, these banknotes narrate the evolving geography of Macau through a captivating series of historical maps. Accompanying each map are vessels from the corresponding era, providing a fascinating glimpse into Macau's maritime history.
These banknotes incorporate iridescent effects and De La Rue's breath-taking level 2 security feature, GEMINI™, which boldly reveals itself under ultraviolet light.

On the reverse, the theme revolves around the transformation of Macau's geography over the years, with land reclamation significantly altering its shape. The 10 denomination, for instance, features a map from 1635, providing a unique perspective from a hillside overlooking Macau and an Eastward orientation-a nod to ancient map traditions in this region.

The obverse side is equally captivating, with a new intaglio vignette of the BNU building. The Lotus flower, Macau's floral emblem, takes the spotlight in the optically variable magnetic ink feature, litho print and is elegantly embedded in the watermark.
"We are thrilled to introduce this stunning new banknote series to the world which embodies the rich history and vibrant future of Macau."
