The Empire District gas Company

encourages ACTION IF YOU SMELL GAS

JOPLIN, MO - February 23, 2017 - The Empire District Gas Company encourages customers to take action if they smell gas.

Natural gas has no scent of its own. The natural gas odor is added for safety reasons to aid in the detection of a gas leak. The rotten egg smell helps in the detection of even the tiniest gas leak. If you smell gas, do not attempt to locate the leak.

  • From a safe distance, call Empire District Gas Company's emergency gas leak number at 800-406-9220.
  • Do not turn any electrical switches, appliances, or lights on or off, or unplug electrical appliances when there is a strong gas odor.
  • Do not use telephones in the area of a strong gas odor.
  • Do not use elevators.
  • Do not position or operate vehicles and power equipment where leaking gas may be present.
  • Do not smoke or use lighters, matches, or other open flames.
