Cost of power to drop in time for higher summer electricity use

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (May 8, 2017)-With the summer months approaching, Eversource is delivering cost savings to Western Mass. customers on its Basic Service supply rate. Today, the company filed a six-month Basic Service price of 8.56 cents per kilowatt-hour effective July 1, 2017, down 6 percent from the current price of 9.12 cents. This represents a pass-through cost to customers for the price of generating power. While New England still faces significant constraints on natural gas supplies that affect the price of electricity, Eversource is pleased to be able to pass this price reduction on to its customers.

'While New England continues to experience many energy challenges, this summertime price cut is good news for our customers as the weather gets warmer and folks start turning on their air conditioners for relief from the heat,' said Penni Conner, Senior Vice President and Chief Customer Officer at Eversource. 'It's also important to remember we offer a variety of energy efficiency programs that can help customers save energy and money year-round, along with convenient monthly payment options.'

Pending approval by the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities, for residential customers using an average of 550 kilowatt-hours of electricity, the monthly bill will be $112.29 compared with $115.38 currently, or 2.7 percent less on the total bill.

As a regulated energy distribution company, Eversource purchases electricity from wholesale suppliers on behalf of its customers and passes the cost directly to them with no profit to the company. By state law, the Basic Service price changes twice a year, on January 1 and July 1. All Eversource customers have the option to buy their power through the company or from a retail supplier.
