The Asia-Pacific (APAC) region leads the global mobile gaming market, generating 64% of total revenue in 2023, as the region is home to 5.2 billion mobile subscribers, accounting for more than half of total mobile subscribers globally, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

GlobalData's latest thematic report "Mobile Gaming," reveals that mobile gaming revenue was worth $124 billion in 2023 and will grow to $195 billion by 2030. In terms of countries, China was the outright leader in mobile gaming, accounting for about 31% of global revenue. The US was a distant second with a 17% share, followed by Japan, South Korea, and Germany.

Rupantar Guha, Principal Analyst, Thematic Intelligence at GlobalData, comments: "Access to 5G networks supports the growth of mobile gaming in APAC. The region accounted for about 75% of global mobile 5G subscriptions in 2023, with 1.8 billion 5G subscriptions, mainly in China, South Korea, and Japan. The 5G subscriptions will increase to nearly four billion by the end of 2028, ensuring the region will continue to lead the mobile gaming market for the foreseeable future."

Mobile gaming is a heavily contested market, with a diverse range of companies jockeying for positions. However mobile gaming companies are under pressure in several areas, especially regulation, which will continue to be a disruptive threat for the foreseeable future.

Guha concludes: "Regulation will continue to be a disruptive threat for the foreseeable future. In 2023, China's draft regulation to curb in-game spending wiped $80 billion in market value from Tencent and NetEase. Regulations around in-app purchases, data privacy, child safety, antitrust, artificial intelligence (AI), and app store commissions will continue to impact all mobile gaming companies."
