FCC Construccion, Convensa and RRC have started the railway modernization contract for the section of the Western Line between Torres Vedras and Caldas da Rainha (Portugal).

The work commencement ceremony was attended by the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Pedro Nuno Santos, and the Vice President of Infrastructure of Portugal, Carlos Fernandes.

The project aims to strengthen the capacity and efficiency of the rail transport service, improving availability levels and reducing travel times. The training of the Western Line, up to Caldas da Rainha, for the use of electric traction rolling stock, modern signaling and telecommunications systems and the optimization of the track layout, will reduce the travel time between Caldas da Rainha - Lisbon and Torres Vedras - Lisbon in about 30 minutes.

Torres Vedras Contract - Caldas da Rainha

The modernization contract for the Western Line between Torres Vedras and Caldas da Rainha consists of the electrification of the section and the modernization of the track, whose length is 44 kilometers, also including the execution of the following actions: Renewal and occasional rectification of the track layout; Construction of a new track, a two-kilometre variant of the existing track, between Campelos and Outeiro da Cabeca, in Torres Vedras, with the aim of promoting the circulation of conventional trains at a speed of 140 km/h; Rehabilitation of buildings and accessibility conditions at five stations (Torres Vedras, Ramalhal, Outeiro, Bombarral and Caldas da Rainha) and four stops (Paul, Sao Mamede, Dagorda and Obidos), with the creation of access for people with mobility reduced as well as with the elevation of platforms to facilitate the entry and exit of the train; Construction of a new line in Sao Mamede converting the stop into a station; Improvement of road and railway safety with the elimination of four level crossings and the automation of the others; Improvement of road crossing conditions through the construction of four railway crossings; Support works for the installation of electronic signaling, telecommunications and GSM-R (Global Mobile Railway Communications System), which guarantees the strengthening of safety conditions and railway traffic.
