BOSTON (AP) _ Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Co. (HMHC) on Thursday reported a loss of $48.4 million in its fourth quarter.

On a per-share basis, the Boston-based company said it had a loss of 38 cents. Losses, adjusted to account for discontinued operations, were 36 cents per share.

The book publisher posted revenue of $178.8 million in the period.

For the year, the company reported net income of $213.6 million, or $1.63 per share, swinging to a profit in the period. Revenue was reported as $1.05 billion.
