Japan Radio Co., Ltd. (JRC) today announced that, as a result of joint efforts with TOKYO-Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) and JSAT MOBILE Communications, it had succeeded in building a network that allows sharing of data, between a vessel and onshore office, collected in a voyage data recorder (VDR) through a high-capacity, high-speed satellite telecommunication service (Fleet Xpress by Inmarsat) thus realizing 'visualization of vessel state.'

Using the satellite telecommunication service (Fleet Xpress) offered by JSAT MOBILE Communications, JRC successfully built a vessel-onshore office network and achieved visualization of vessel state on a MOL-operated vessel. More specifically, JRC has confirmed that :
・A wide variety of vessel navigation and main engine data collected by a VDR* can be received at an onshore office and monitored on a real-time basis.
・The received data can be forwarded to a land-based Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) for checking of vessel movements.
・Past data in a VDR can also be obtained anytime via satellite telecommunication as necessary.

The present achievement is expected to overcome the following long-standing issues :
・Sending data stored in the main VDR system onboard to an onshore office requires copying of data to an auxiliary storage device such as a hard disk drive and physically mailing it.
・Acquisition of VDR data from a vessel at sea has been thus impossible, and even when data is sent by mail, delivery efficiency relies on the postal service of the port, making timely data acquisition difficult.

Potential benefits of the network capabilities are as follows :
・Real-time monitoring of vessel sailing status allows enhanced support from land, contributing to safer operation.
・In case of an accident, the playback software can analyze vessel movement, voice, and radar data leading up to the time of the event. Furthermore, when forwarded to the ECDIS, vessel movement data can show more detailed vessel movement sequences.

JRC will further develop the present achievement and continue to offer products and systems that contribute to navigation support from onshore office and improve the efficiency.

*VDR
A VDR is also known as a 'vessel black box.' It is retrieved from a vessel after an accident such as collision and sinking. Navigation information, including speed, steering, engine information, conversations on the bridge, VHF voice communication, and radar information is then retrieved for investigation of the cause of the accident.
