As of today, locals and tourists can connect for free in the following squares:  Humilladero, Santa Barbara, Felipe II, Plaza de Los Cubos, Prosperidad Square and Plaza de la Paja. The network of the City Council of Madrid extends its coverage and add new areas to its great city network: Newsstands, EMT city buses, intercity and tourist buses, Innovation Centers, Franchises, etc.

Madrid, May the 16th, 2014-. In the middle of San Isidro feast and with the Internet Day 2014 just around the corner, GOWEX (GOW-MAB, NYSE Alternext ALGOW, LGWXY OTC Market), a leading company in the creation of WiFi Smart Cities, takes a further step in its goal to turn Madrid into a great Wireless Smart City, in cooperation with the City Council. With this purpose, GOWEX and the Madrid City Council have decided to extend the free WiFi service provided since last year in the squares of Madrid.

Specifically, the public spaces that will count, as of today, on a free WiFi Internet access are: Plaza del Humilladero (La Latina), Plaza Santa Bárbara  (Alonso Martínez), Felipe II (near the bus station), Plaza de los Cubos (Ventura Rodriguez ), Plaza Prosperidad (Ciudad Jardín) and Plaza de la Paja (Latina). These 'WiFi Squares' adhere to project launched by GOWEX and the City Council of Madrid just a year ago and provide free internet to emblematic places such as the Plaza Mayor, Opera, Callao or Olavide, among others.

A city connected with free WiFi

Since GOWEX launched in 2009 its WiFi project for the newsstands (Quioscos WiFi), the areas with free connection in Madrid have spread to every corner of the city: from the urban EMT buses to franchises like Delina's, Pans & Company and Café y Té, from Madrid City Tour Buses to the Intercity Buses Arriva Blas. As a result, the capital of Spain is among the best connected cities in the world thanks to the free WiFi, as much on the cutting edge as other big towns like New York.

How do Madrilenian browse?

Around a million users browse in Madrid through the different WiFi networks handled by GOWEX. They connect, on average, more than 25 minutes a day and mostly in the evening between 19:00 and 20:00, as described in the WiFi GOWEX Report. This report also highlight that both locals and tourists prefer to connect during working days and they use, 9 out of 10 times, mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets and consoles to connect.

Plaza Mayor and Callao, the favorite squares to browse

This behavior is reflected in the areas where users more often connect, mostly located in the Plaza Mayor (29.65%) and the Plaza Callao (21.18%), walking and "hangout" areas where people use the free  WiFi to connect mainly to social networks or to check the email.
