Sports Desk, Apr 5 (EFE).- Liverpool returned to the top of the English Premier League table with a 3-1 victory over bottom side Sheffield United, while Cole Palmer grabbed two late goals to complete a hat-trick as Chelsea sank Manchester United 4-3 on Thursday.

Darwin Nunez gave the Reds an early lead when Sheffield goalkeeper Ivo Grbic's attempted clearance from a backpass crashed into him and crossed the line in the 17th minute of the contest.

Despite Liverpool's dominance, they were punished for not taking their chances as Conor Bradley redirected a Gustavo Hamer header into his own net to level the scoreline.

Any fear of Liverpool dropping points was allayed by Alexis Mac Allister, who rifled in a shot from the edge of the box 13 minutes from the end of normal time.

Mac Allister, who has delivered five goals and five assists in his last 10 games, came close to scoring again when he fired a free-kick from 25 yards that hit the post, with the goalkeeper firmly beaten.

"I would rather prefer you all use your eyes and just say what you see because it's obvious, I would say. Super-important player for us, what a wonderful boy," said Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp at the end of the match, praising the Argentine.

"I met his dad after the game, he said 'thank you', I said 'gracias'! That was the full conversation. 'Hola' I said as well and then my Spanish ends. Wonderful player, wonderful boy. I'm really happy for Liverpool that we got him."

Cody Gakpo headed an Andy Robertson cross in from inside the box in the 90th minute to seal the victory and ensure Liverpool regained the top spot in the standings, two points ahead of Arsenal with 70 points.

If Mac Allister provided the appetizer at Anfield, the main dish was served by Palmer at Stamford Bridge against Manchester United, where Chelsea trailed for 99 minutes before his two goals in two minutes at the death helped them end up as winners.

The Blues had taken a two-goal lead in the first half thanks to Conor Gallagher's opener and Palmer's coolly converted penalty.

However, Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes struck to make it 2-2 at halftime.

Garnacho became the first teenager to score two or more goals in three Premier League matches in a single season since Michael Owen in 1998-99 when he struck again after the break to put United in the lead.

Palmer, forced to leave Manchester City on the deadline day after falling behind in competition with Phil Foden, equalized from the penalty spot after Noni Madueke had been felled by Diogo Dalot in the 100th minute.

He completed the Chelsea turnaround moments later with his third goal of the night, which went in after taking a deflection from Scott McTominay.

'It was amazing because I was thinking we deserved it, we were the better team today. It was fair when we scored in the last minute," said Chelsea coach Mauricio Pochettino.

Chelsea, with the win, moved up to 10th place in the table, just two points behind West Ham United in the final European qualification spot, with two games in hand over the Hammers. EFE
