Maxima can get construction sites connected to the internet quickly and efficiently with its Rapid Site Deployment solution as well as offering tailored services for longer-term projects

Being connected to email and the internet is as much of a necessity on large construction sites that without web and email access, any substantial project would risk grinding to a halt just as if there no plant or materials.

Filling this gap between what construction companies demand and what telecommunication companies can offer is Maxima's Rapid Site Deployment solution.

"The reality is that someone working on a £2 million job doesn't want to be wasting time dealing with telcos," says Maxima managing director Paul Adams. "We can get people up and working with five days' notice."

Maxima does this by installing a bonded 3G box - the equivalent of three 3G mobiles in a box - onsite, and this is connected to a router providing wireless internet access. Complete installation takes a single day.

"If you've got a Portable cabin, we are able to run cabling from the box to laptops and workstations as well," adds Mr Adams. "It means people can start to talk to each other and the outside world almost as soon as they're onsite, and we can put more than one box down if there are a large number of users."

Mr Adams says although RSD is not a permanent solution, it gets people up and running quickly while the firm assesses longer-term needs as the project progresses. For example, Maxima works with construction firms on major rail and power projects where onsite teams are going to be in place for many months and even years. After the initial 3G box RSD solution, the company works with clients to identify the best long-term solution.

Mr Adams says the firm's service can offer a more rapid and better tailored connectivity solution to the construction industry than those offered by the major telcos. "The big telcos can take 90 days with lease lines because they want to organise a survey of the site for a line, then dig a trench for it and lay the line. But with our client obviously capable of digging a trench, all we need the telco to do is survey a line in a trench that's already dug. By coordinating the work, we can halve the time it takes for a line to go in."

For remote sites where cabling may not be viable, the firm also offers a satellite communications solution. Mr Adams says Maxima offers the flexibility to move phone and broadband infrastructure around the site as the job progresses.

The firm also offers an asset management service to large firms that are likely to need online communication solutions project after project. "They can purchase the equipment and we can then decommission and store it for reuse on other sites," he says. "On big sites, you often see contractors leave and the equipment ends up in a skip, which is a cost wasted. We can redeploy."

In addition to RSD, the firm says it offers integrated business management solutions for construction firms' entire business needs. Major clients include Murphy Group and the firm recently signed a major Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) deal with equipment hire specialist Hewden based on its offering, Microsoft Dynamics AX ERP for the construction industry. This includes specialist HR, contract sales and management, payroll and equipment rental and cross-hire capabilities as well as service and maintenance.

"If a site manager wants to keep track of deliveries and they have an ERP at the head office, then we can integrate the onsite activities with that," says Mr Adams. In addition, the firm offers Microsoft Dynamics CRM cloud computing solutions to contractors and building product suppliers, such as Kingspan and Karndean, to help win the construction projects in the first place.

All of the information is stored remotely at one of Maxima's four UK data centres - providing greater redundancy and security for vital project information than an onsite computer - and Mr Adams says the solutions offered by his firm are also flexible to the needs of construction projects. "With cloud computing, you can scale up and down," says Mr Adams.

You can pay a fee according to your needs on a monthly basis. And if there are security concerns, for example, on a site with a military application, or the documentation is highly confidential, you can section which part of data is accessible to whom and set up a list of authorised
users," he says.
