April 17 (Reuters) - Microsoft's $13 billion investment into ChatGPT-maker OpenAI is set to avoid a formal investigation by European Union merger watchdogs, Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday.

The European Commission has decided that the tie-up does not merit a formal probe because it falls short of a takeover and that Microsoft does not control the direction of OpenAI, the report said citing people familiar with the matter.

Microsoft, OpenAI and a spokesperson of the European Commission did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comments. (Reporting by Yuvraj Malik in Bengaluru; Editing by Shilpi Majumdar)
